dad as a voodoo doll by grrl+dog
"Few things are as closely associated with Voodoo as the Voodoo doll. The tiny straight pin is mightier than the sword, or the pen. The Voodoo doll is a form of gris-gris, a ritualized form of invoking the spirits, or fate, to act in a defined way towards a targeted person. The doll can be used for love, for power and domination, for luck, for uncrossing and, yes, in some evil ways, for harm." Platinum blonde is so 2004. Now, the trend is white. (Silver or pale purple are also pretty in right now). If i was pale and had long hair, I would probably be taking part in it too. so elegant, don't you think?
Ballerinas are famous for their long, elegant legs. This delicate art doll takes that form to the extreme. Apart from the spindly legs, I am equally impressed by the thin arms and tired expression. She looks like she has just kicked her shoes off after a long day of practicing and pushing her body to the limit. Her pose isn't just an attractive way to display the doll. It tells a complete story.
I am wishing everyone a happy World Doll Day- This is the Holiday's 28th year!
This year, WORLD DOLL DAY will be celebrated online on different websites, forums and communities! Coincidentally, the holiday (usually celebrated the second Saturday of June) lands on it's original date of June 14th. Anyone around the world having any kind of World Doll Day event is welcome to join in by sending an email with your activity, story, pictures, link or event details to: [email protected] When most people think of embroidery, the image of delicate, single women waiting for marriage comes to mind. According to Dennis:
Embroidery has throughout the ages has promoted submission to the expected norms of feminine obedience and often evokes the stereotype of the virgin...Embroidery has become indelibly associated with stereotypes of femininity. Historically through the centuries stitch or embroidery has functioned as a source of constraint for women... In 1812, the Brothers Grimm published a book including the tale of the 12 Princesses. Dennis based this work on the tale, exploring its depiction of women and their secrets. The story goes as follows: "12 princesses, each prettier and far more beautiful than the last, sleep in twelve beds in the same room; every night their doors are securely locked, but in the morning their dancing shoes are found to be worn through as if they had been dancing all night. The king, perplexed, promises his kingdom and each daughter to any man who can discover the princesses’ midnight secret within three days and three nights, but those who fail within the set time limit will be put to death. Several princes forfeit their lives in the attempt to uncover the secret of the twelve princesses who conspire against these men to ensure that their secret remains undiscovered." This is a great collection- I wish pupa's were actually this fascinating and pretty. I tried to add a picture of a real one in nature, but I couldn't find anything even closely resembling the delicacy, color palate or amount of detail. The twin sister team has done it again! I'm in love.
Art dolls have been blowing up the online market for years now, but what separates dolls from sculptures? According to a post by Hannie Sarris,
"The Art Doll is a work of art drawn from the mind and hand of the artist and not bound by the same rules as dolls in other categories. It doesn't have to be recognizable as a human form. It may be dressed or not. If dressed, the clothes may be carved, sculpted, glued on etc. Any media is permissible and likely. The art doll is judged by the same criteria as any other form of art, i.e., by the principles of design, scale, proportion, contrast, dominance, rhythm, balance, and must be judged for what it IS, nothing else." These days, however I feel like sculpture is also free of conventional rules and mediums. In other words, in both cases anything goes. In both cases, any medium can be used. In both cases, the original subject of the piece doesn't have to be recognizable. Maybe the big difference is scale? In my opinion, an art doll could easily be described as a sculpture of a person that, whether clothed or not, looks to have its own life, personality and backstory and can be held or posed by the artist or owner. They can be decorative, like sculptures, but retain some characteristics of a toy. The Down East Doll Show is coming up!
